It´s a bit of a schlep from the rest of Manhattan, but well worth it: one of my favorite Big Apple museums is way up in Fort Tryon Park, in Manhattan´s Washington Heights neighborhood. The Cloisters is run by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and specializes in European medieval art and architecture. And yes, there are actual cloisters here, which were shipped here from France in the very early 20th century and opened as a museum in 1938. It definitely evokes another era - by which I´ve always been fascinated (although I sure wouldn't have wanted to live back then).
