Ghat, the atmospheric oasis

Located in the southwest of the country, right near the border with Algeria (and best reached from Tripoli by , this desert oasis town of around 15,000 offers a compelling historical, environmental, and intensely local experience thanks to its ancient mud-brick old quarter El Khamis (pictured here); its bustling souk (market), a traditional tea and guest houses; a great little museum showcasing the region and its Tuareg people; prehistoric rock paintings, engravings, and carving at nearby Tadrart Acasus and Tassili N´Ajer mountains; the Ottoman-era (17th-century) Ghat Fortress on Koukemen hill; and starkly beautiful surrounding desert landscapes (of which you can get sweeping views with an easy hike up nearvy Mount Nefusa).
