Uruguay´s sweet little colonial gem: Colonia del Sacramento

The last time I visited Buenos Aires, one of the most memorable days of the trip, was spent, ironically enough, in Uruguay. A comfy, Buquebus high-speed ferry ride away across the wide, murky Río Plata (one to three hours, depending on the ship, as well as a 2½-hour drive from Uruguay’s capital Montevideo) lies a small city that's home to the loveliest Spanish colonial old town in South America’s Southern Cone (and one of the most fetching on the entire continent, well deserving of its…

How Ecuador´s eco-paradise Galápagos Islands stay eco-friendly

As concern for our shared global biosphere rises, many are taking it to heart when it comes to travel, as well. Along with booming ecotourism, both providers and consumers in the travel and tourism sector are looking to promote tourism that's "sustainable" - a trendy buzzword, for sure, but one that simply means striving to minimise as much as possible any negative impacts on our increasingly beleaguered environment whilst allowing visitors to enjoy and learn more about it. And today we're…

Guyana at a glance

snl.com   With a population of just 818,000 (and just over the size of Kansas, or England and Scotland comined), this is a country relatively few people have heard of, but will soon be be much better known - in part because huge recent oil-field finds are poised to make it a "petro power" and because more and more travelers are coming to appreciate its ecotourism riches. Bordering Brazil, Suriname, and Venezuela on the north coast of South America and with a coastline of 285 miles, Guyana…

  • Not too many people know the Corn Islands off Nica's Caribbean coast, but they're a pair of ramshackle little specks inhabited mostly by black Nicaraguans, descendants of migrants generations ago from islands like Jamaica and St. Lucia. I visited here way back around 2006, and so I was interested to see a travel vlogger named Matt Kramer did a video about the Corns about a year ago which pretty much captures their paradisical feel - and it sure looks like they haven't changed much since my visit! They're still very much a bare-bones, budget kind of destination; if you need anything beyond basic, your options here are very limited. Anyway, have a look: https://youtu.be/TLCjbtwN06Q
