Foremost among Dublin´s appeal for literary travelers is of course its sites associated with Ireland´s most famous writer. The most atmospheric, in the suburb of Sandycove, is probaby this "Martello tower" built for coastal defense by the British military in 1804. It was more recently renamed the James Joyce Tower because it´s here that Ulysses famously opens; the writer also spent six days here in 1904, and today it houses a museum dedicated to him.
