A walled city unto itself, built in red sandstone in 1573 under the Mughal emperor Akbar, Lal-Qila was the seat of the rulers of the Mughal dynasty until 1638, when the capital was moved to New Delhi. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, its 94 acres of palaces, citadels, and other structures are open to visitors from sunrise to sunset.
