Dating back to the 8th century, the updated ryokans of today feature traditional Japanese decor; a mix of rooms with traditional tatami mats and western-style beds; communal baths; and wearing of traditional yukata robes in public areas. This luxurious example KAI Nikko in the charming town of Nikko two hours north of Tokyo, also features breathtaking views of Lake Chuzenji and Mount Nantai.
