The big celebration in my country this month takes place from June 20 to 24: the fogueres or hogueras (bonfires) of St. John on the 23rd, connected with the summer solstice and pagan traditions but also later co-opted by the Catholic Church (as it did with so many other pagan holidays) to commemorate the birth of St. John the Baptist. Partying and bonfires are the two central elements, and their expression ranges from quiet beachside and countryside observances in some parts of Spain to a big, all-stops-out party complete with parades and huge papier-mâché effigies in the city of Alicante.
