Estonia´s largest island (1,032 square miles), off the west coast and a two-hour flight from Tallinn, is an interesting place thanks to its thousands of years of history. Once home to pirates known as the "eastern Vikings," today it has a population of a bit over 31,000. Capital Kuressaare (pop. around 13,000), dating back to the 12th century, is the place to start, with its medieval old town, castle/museum (which goes back to at least the 1380s). and even spa resorts specializing in healing mud treatments, Other highlights include 93-sq-mi. Vilsandi National Park, a quintet of 18th- and 19th-century windmills (pictured here): and even several btahing beaches.
