A look at Belize City

The national capital, with a bit over 61,000 people, gets short shrift among visitors for several reasons. First of all, it´s not what they usually come to Belize for, and after landing here they head elsewhere, to the coasts, the diving/diving snorkeling, Mayan ruins, and so forth. The city also has had something of a bad rep for crime, although the authorities have been making strides on this front. And much of it was flattened by Hurricane  Harriet in 1961, and so only a few historical relics remain. But still, it's worth a stop for highlights such as Battlefield Park, St John's Cathedral, the Fort George (Baron Bliss) Lighthouse, and Museum of Belize, the Marine and Coastal Zone Museum, and some 30 miles outside town, the Belize Zoo.
