Thought to have been founded in 331 BCE and abandoned around 1050 CE, one of the Mayan world's largest cities was originally a tributary an eventually a conquerer of Tikal in present-day neighboring Guatemala. At its peak Caracol was home to around 200,000 (nearly ⅔ the population of present-day Belize). Today managed by the University of Central Florida, the site is located near the Guatemala border south of the village of San Ignacio. It has various puramids, ball courts, stelae, and tombs, and pyramids - the main one of which, Canaa (Sky Place) is at 137 feet still Belize's highest manmade structure.
