In the province of Salta but a good 8½-hour drive from the provincial capital, this remote mining village of fewer than 300 inhabitants has an old section of adobe houses, dating back to the original Spanish settlers, and a newer one in more contemporary style. The immediate area is rich in minerals such as sulphur, lead, iron, zinc, and of course salt, and the town has its own generator, which shuts down at midnight.
