This pair of West Indies isles serves up different vibes: lots of historic sites, resorts, dining & shopping on larger Antigua, barefoot elegance on Barbuda. Antigua's also one of the Caribbean's top boating destinations, famous for its annual regatta.

Cocobay Resort in '9 of the Most Romantic Hotels for Valentine's Day in the Caribbean'

Palm Island Resort     These tropical isles usually rank high on the list of V-Day getaways, and offer an embarassment of riches when it comes to hotels and resorts. So this year a freelancer put together for USA Today a list of nine for couples to consider for a romantic Valentine's weekend. You may not agree with all of them - and, indeed, I find the list skews too much toward bigger resorts and largely ignores charming smaller inns, but I can attest to one, Palm Island (above) in the…

Antigua gets a shout-out in 'Best Caribbean Shopping Off the Beaten Path'

Why in the world should you settle for all those cheesy malls and resort gift shops, the cruise-terminal complexes and hyper- commercialized downtowns clogged with cookie-cutter perfume, watch, and T-shirt shops? If you know where to look, it’s still possible to find unique local products, atmosphere, or both. There are of course various straw markets and crafts centers on various islands, of course, but here are just a few of the other favorites I’ve come across in my years covering the…

  • Obviously you can get some great deals in the off-season. But if you really want quiet, stay away from all but the tony, pricey, more intimate all-inclusives (such as Galley Bay, Curtain Bluff, Blue Waters). Siboney Beach Club is a great little find on Dickenson Bay. You'll find seclusion on the more rugged east coast, but I feel the hotels aren't great value (or they're.... big all-inclusives). I have mixed feelings about CocoBay, but it's smaller at least, as is its sister property Coconut Beach. Harmony Hall had some nice villas, but not sure they're operational in June/July. If you can give an idea of budget (and what else you're looking for beyond peace and quiet), that will help.
  • Let me first do the basic research and then come back to ask some questions.
  • With all the great beaches, there are plenty of quiet places to relax and read. If you have questions while deciding let us know. I'm sure the group can provide some advice if you need it.
  • Not yet decided - I just have a plane ticket - thanks to a DBC voucher :) I am still planning/researching for a hideaway. I have to do some serious reading so need a calm place
