In June 2021, El Salvador's 40-year-old center-right president Nayib Bukele got the country's parliament to take the risky and highly controversial decision to adopt Bitcoin as the national currency, replacing the U.S. dollar. To help illustrate the impact on life in the country, after the decision went into effect in September, Italian Bitcoin podcasters Rikki and Laura took it upon themselves to travel around El Salvador for 45 days using only Bitcoin - and it was an eye-opening experience, to put it mildly.
