Merengue, the quintessential music of the Dominican Republic

LosMocanos.com Few cultural forms are more associated with the Dominican Republic than merengue music and the brisk, shuffling, hip-wagging dance that goes with it (no one’s exactly sure where the name comes from – sweet, frothy beaten egg whites or the “mareng” or “méringue” music of neighboring Haiti).  Going back more than 150 years, like tango in Argentina it once scandalized the prim and proper because of its ribald lyrics and sexy moves. Well, that’s sure as heck a thing of the past…

What went down at Eurovision 2024 in Malmö, Sweden

SVT/EBU The world´s premier song contest just completed its spectacular 68th edition with the usual lineup of singing, dancing, special effects, silliness and seriousness, pulling in a TV audience of hundreds of millions plus thousands of fans who flocked to Sweden´s third city from 90 countries. Plus this year there was a degree of history making (non-binaries, take a bow!), along with controversy in the form of scandal (thanks to a goofy Dutchman) and protests (thanks to Israel´s…

Music is a huge part of the allure in Branson, Missouri

Welcome to the town of Branson, set in the rolling Ozark Mountains of southwest Missouri some four hours from St. Louis. In contrast with the rather pastoral area that surrounds it, Branson is an island of fun and frivolity, exciting thrill rides, and a long and varied list of entertainment options – along with a choice of more educational and even highbrow alternatives. They combine to create a destination that is somewhat, shall I say, different. Here’s a place where kitsch becomes catchy,…

9 U.S. small towns and cities with big music chops

Hundreds of people who were jammed into an amphitheater swayed and clapped their hands in time to music. Not far away, a much smaller crowd listened with rapt attention as a trio combined the sounds of mellow jazz with hip-hop. Music fans gather in large cities like Los Angeles and Las Vegas to treat their ears to favorite melodies and harmonies. Others around the country enjoy their preferred tunes and performers where they live, or close by.

  • Shane, one of the great things about Havana (and I assume you'll be spending a good bit of time in Havana), is that music is all over the place. In particular, you'll want to see what's on at clubs like Café Cantante, El Gato Tuerto, and La Zorra y el Cuervo. There's also always a band playing at El Patio restaurant in front of the old town cathedral, and in the courtyard at the Hotel Nacional. If I think of anything else, I'll let you know!
  • Awesome.. my two favourite things .. music and travel in one discussion forum. I am going to Cuba in a few weeks and really looking forward to checking out the music down there .. anybody got directions to the Buena Vista Social Club ???
