Hi David, Indeed an interesting fenomenom. I like to get Cuban sandwiches and other goodies from some of those trucks. Good price and "with all the trimmings." On a different subject, the national press has suggested that the beaches in the Florida Keys and the Florida Southeast (Atlantic Coast) are contaminated by the BP oil fiasco. That is not true. We were in Miami Beach today and the water was a pristine as ever. Come and see for yourself. Enjoy the balmy weather and the low season hotel prices.

Interesting piece by local food writer Victoria Pesce Elliott in the Miami Herald a couple of days ago about food trucks finally reaching Miami in a big way. You'll find them in locations including South Beach, downtown, the Design District, Biscayne Boulevard, with updates via Web and Twitter. Top contenders include Gastropod (www.gastropodmiami.com, international bistro fare) and Latin Burger (www.latinburger.com) - gourmet tacos, latinized burgers/fries). About time!

Check out www.evergladesareatours.com. They do motorboat assisted kayak eco tours, so a motorboat gets you to scenic locations and then you eco paddle. If it is buggy back in the creeks they can set up around the white sand beach islands closer to the Gulf. I've done this tour in the mornings in summer and had a good time. You still want to use bug spray but if you stay out of the dense mangroves you're going to be much better off.

there are 31 species of mosquitoes in the Everglades. In the summer you'll be on a first name basis with them all. Bad time to visit

Yes it will be hot and you will be eaten alive by mosquitoes in the Glades in summer. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but there's no way to soft-pedal it. If you're still interested, I can suggest some outfitters. Many don't operate or cut operations in summer. Let me know if you're coming in from the East (Miami) or West (Naples/Fort Myers).

"Looking for South Florida nature tours suitable for family with 8 year old
Heading down to South Florida in late June for a week. We're a pretty outdoorsy family into hiking, kayaking, the whole outdoor thing, but we've never been to the Everglades. Is summer a totally horrible time to go out there? Will we be eaten alive by mosquitoes? Will it be too hot?

And we'd like to find a reputable, top-of-the-line but reasonably priced outfit to take us out there. Our eight yeard old son will be traveling with us. Also interested in other outdoor adventure possibilities in the area.

Any suggestions??"
