Oui, c'est encore la belle France, from the bright lights of Paris to the rocky shores of Brittany/Normandy and the chic vibe of the Côte d'Azur - both deluxe and pas cher.

5 of the most beautiful beaches in Corsica

Robert Brands France´s ravishing, rocky island in the Mediterranean (which the French dub l´Île de la Beauté, the Isle of Beauty) is home to some of the sea´s most stunning beaches, ranging from the more developed strands of the south to the wilder northern beaches with few or no amenities. If you´re looking for a beachy getaway next summer - especially one that allows you to combine it with fabulous history, culture, cuisine, and eco opportunities - do give serious consideration to la…

Provence: lovely hill towns plus beaucoup wine & cheese equal paradise

Victor Block   Naturally we started our trip off with a glass of wine at lunch - after all, it was too late for breakfast…  “Deux verres de vin rouge – um, uh -- pas sec. Un peu…” Finally I just threw my hands in the air and laughed. I meant well but it seemed unfair to make our poor waiter suffer for my lack of fluency with the language. Our waiter obliged with two glasses of wine and a hearty, “Welcome to Provence!" Our first morning, COVID-19 vaccination card in hand, we left to explore…

Christmas in Colmar, in Alsace-Lorraine

Europe’s towns and cities famously light up and don holiday finery for Yuletide, but during the Christmas season in Colmar, in northeast France’s Alsace region – already famous for its charming historic quarter, with its cobblestone streets, canals, and half-timbered houses – the displays reach another level entirely, going far beyond lightbulbs adorning the main streets to the façades of the small houses in its old town illuminated in all the colours of the rainbow. The results, as any…

  • Check. The silk thermal underwear is the best! I even have the silk sock liners. They work great. If my feet are cold my whole body is miserable no matter how many layers I wear.
  • Do not forget wool gloves, a scarf, warm socks and boots. I have a collection of thermal underwear. It may be silk - but hey. You can always take clothes off if it is warmer.

  • Je comprends. I am adding to my winter wardrobe with that in mind. Layers, plenty of black and comfortable but chic shoes/boots. If that doesn't do the trick then vin chaud:) Thanks again Karen.

  • Again merci for your information. Can't wait to be in Paris!
  • There are always restaurants open on New Year's Day and some small markets (the Ma and Pop type). The large groceries will be closed. People need to recover from the previous night!
  • Merci Karen. We will absorb the magic of the night with our digital cameras (and champagne flutes) in hand. Do you happen to know if any restaurants, epiceries, markets, etc. are open New Year's Day or is it a holiday for all? Just want to be prepared to make plans accordingly. Thanks again for your insight.
  • Deery: Whatever you do, don't book a table at a restaurant. You'll pay more for less and usually, it's a humongous rip-off. I always go to one of Paris's traiteurs (or Au Bon Marche) and pack a picnic filled with goodies plus a lot of champagne (for the adults). I go to concerts and walk the streets. At midnight, I end up with the gang (and a zillion other people) by the Trocadéro, Walking in Paris on New Year's Eve is magical - but dress for the occasion. It can and does get cold. If you can be on a barge at midnight - that's fun too. Yes, it's touristy. But, why not!
