Green and mountainous, the Granite State boasts good skiing and other outdoorsy pursuits, especially on and around lakes like Winnipesaukee; there's even a sliver of seashore. Cities include Concord, Nashua, Manchester, and Portsmouth.

This is a wonderful small museum that recently underwent a major renovation. It has an unexpectedly nice collection, and it also offers tours of the Zimmerman House, one of two Frank Lloyd Wright houses in Manchester. The houses are from Mr. Wright's Usonian period, which were designed for average people. (The other house is privately owned.) If you go, try Cotton down in the Millyard for lunch.
Manchester is undergoing a bit of a renaissance, with new loft-type residences going into the old brick mill buildings on the river and a very lively restaurant and arts scene. There is also a very good minor league baseball team, and a new Hilton Garden Inn that overlooks the new ballpark so you can watch the games from a picture window in your room. Good business hotel as well.
