Wastin´ away again at the spa in the Dominican Republic´s Margaritaville Island Reserve Cap Cana

Luxebeatmag.com Wellness-minded travelers will appreciate the resort’s St. Somewhere Spa, where healing and holistic treatments begin with a fabulous hydrotherapy circuit “guided water experience” designed to soothe, comfort, and ease away stress. I have experienced dozens of spas over the years, the St. Somewhere Spa makes my top three spa list - which says a lot! The service began as we were guided through a sauna, then eucalyptus steam room, a red-light therapy shower, followed by a series…

  • Brenda Hill and I are working on a column featuring spa cuisine. If you have any clients that feature spa cuisine with their spas, we would like to hear from you at mdhill@noralyn.com.

What we would need is the following:
1 or 2 recipes and accompanying jpegs
    Chef bio and jpeg
A paragraph or two about the property and website.

This feature will be announced in a mailing to 260,000 as well and be featured on a food page that gets 1.6 million visitors a month. It will also be linked to our own "Where and What in the World" blog and syndicated on several networks and through social media.

We are also looking for some easy pool side appetizers for another column and the requirements are the same.

Thank you in advance for your consideration.
Again, you can contact me at mdhill@noralyn.com.

  • One of the most memorable spa experiences I've ever had: the King's Chamber in Marienbad, Czech Republic. I'm sure prices have gone up since my bubbly soak, but it's well worth the splurge. I wrote about it in Arthur Frommer's Budget Travel:

"Today I am king--for 40 minutes, anyway, soaking under frescoed ceilings in the very tub that once held England's Edward VII. Gas bubbles dance in the warm spring water, soothing my skin (and, I'm told, lowering my blood pressure) as I doze off, happy as a clam: this regal indulgence, this rococo chamber worthy of a museum, is mine for all of 20 bucks. Welcome to Marienbad (Marianske Lazne in the tongue-twisting local language), one of three-dozen Czech spa towns where a day of Old World pampering, medical treatments, and three hearty meals can cost as little as 1,750 Czech crowns ($50) per person per day in low season (generally October through April)--less than a standard hotel room in most of western Europe (in high season, prices run from $71 to $95, still a decent deal if you don't mind the crowds).

  • David, thanks for the mention, albeit a belated acknowledgment.

I direct everyone to my current review article on the Abbey Resort & Avani Spa, which is appearing in the August issue of "Les Nouvelles Esthetiques & Spa", a leading spa trade publication. This is a favorite destination for escape and rejuvenation in the Lake Geneva, WI area. If the link doesn't work, go to www.lneonline.com; digital edition pps. 10-20. LNE has more of my spa reviews in their print queue. My article blog, http://definitivespablog.blogspot.com/ also contains related topics, including product reviews and facility reviews, like the Hotel Del Coronado Beach Village & Spa (CA) and the Heidel House Resort & Evensong Spa (WI). I'll be heading to the Phoenix area later this month to review some of their high-end properties and spas.

It's packed with full-article posts that cover a range of topics, including property and product reviews; she also provides other expert content upon request.
  • Just noticed an ad in today's Miami Herald for the upcoming "Miami Spa Month" (www.MiamiSpaMonth.com) in July. Not a bad notion, to take the idea of "restaurant month" and transfer it to spas -- and this is the second year they've done it, so I guess it must've worked out well enough in '08. The bottom line is that you can get a $99 treatment at 27 très fancy and pricey spas like the ones at the Mandarin Oriental, the Delano, the Ritz-Carltons, Setai, and so forth.
  • Interesting item I came across on the good-value spa at the Riviera Resort and Spa in Palm Springs, on a Web site out in Santa Barbara, CA, TheDailySound.com:

"Built in 1959 and once a haunt of Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack, the hotel had seen its glory days. But in 2008 the hotel was purchased by the Noble House Hotels and Resorts and given a facelift. Sticking with the original structure and building on the hip style of the 60’s, the hotel has a retro glamour that pays homage to the past while keeping up with the times.

With prices more reminiscent of the Embassy Suites but service more in-line with the Four Seasons, this place makes a fabulous budget conscious spa getaway. Rooms here can easily be found for $99, and you get a lot of bang for your buck.

Filling the space that was once the Hotel’s theater is a 11,000 square foot spa. The spa offers a worldly menu with treatments from every corner of the globe, from: Indian Abhyanga, to Thai massage, to Egyptian Milk Rituals. I chose the Javanese Royal Treatment, which entailed a Balinese style massage, herbal exfoliation and rose petal bath. Although I would not say the treatments are bargain prices, they are on the lower end for a resort…my two-hour treatment was $250, which at many resorts a similar treatment would cost upwards of $500. www.psriviera.com."
