Kariega Game Reserve: a South African recovery story

It took us three days to drive from Cape Town along South Africa’s "Garden Route" to Kariega Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape, but it was well worth the drive. Once it was 27 farms, which have all been returned to the wild, and the reserve now covers 115 square kilometers (44½ sq. miles), owned and operated by two of those original farming families. A fictional British TV series, Wild at Heart, which ran from 2006 to 2012, told about much the same thing. The animals at Kariega were imported…

Pantsula, the Cool Dance of South Africa's Urban Youth

Literally, pantsula translates from Zulu as "to walk like a duck". It's an energetic, syncopated urban dance that originated in Johannesburg townships during a traumatic period of apartheid in the 1950s, and is today seeing a resurgence among the black youth (as well as some whites) of South Africa. To experience and understand it, we travel to the streets of Joburg's Tembisa township, where pantsula is part of day-to-day life, with many dancers showing off their skills in the middle of the…

South Africa´s safari menu is great for families

Unsplash   The Rainbow Nation is home to 42 public and private game reserves, including Africa's largest, Kruger National Park. There are three options in particular which are particularly kid-friendly: Pilanesberg National Park - arguably the safest safari option out there. it's also very affordable. The accommodation is fenced-in, and there are many amenities for children since most visitors are families with kids. There’s no sense of wilderness as in more common safari locations, but…

Cape Town, South Africa: must-see, must-do, must-eat tips for next April
We are planning on 4 nights in Cape Town, South Africa next April prior to our safari adventure.  I am particularly interested in any tidbits - must…
  • After being irritated by the vuvuzelas before the World Cup - I actually loved them when at a game - continued to blow mine with pride throughout the World Cup! Sorry to those of you who don't like them but think most people here will definately be taking them back home with them... but - even if you don't like Vuvuzelas - there is so much me to enjoy in South Africa - and Camps Bay of course. For more economic choices - Hout Bay just around the corner also has great value..and has a working harbour - with boats going out and GREAt restaurants as well.! contact us for Villas and apartments if required.... info@zippingzebra.com
  • We will be delighted to offer a discount to the media on accommodation in Camps Bay (definitely the best place to stay) - please e-mail me on info@campsbayapartments.com
  • @Julia : The vuvuzelas were driving ME crazy - and I was nowhere near the World Cup :-) As for Camps Bay: If you love beaches, you'll love Camps Bay. There are some great lodging alternatives in the area; hotels, bed and breakfasts and rental apartments. Make sure to do your homework before you leave...
  • Hello Elizabeth,

We have tried this option over the past several years with no success. We have extensive coverage of luxury and safari Southern and Eastern Africa and we have published articles on the uxury service of other carriers to the region. I'll email you as you request to see if this year's media rates work out. Thanks. Marie
  • Thanks for all the suggestions on my South Africa journey. I had a blast. It was great to see all the fans at the World Cup, but I am happy to be away from the vuvuzelas. I'm planning a return trip in January so I can hit Camps Bay Beach in Cape Town.
  • Simon,
We do still offer media rates to South Africa and Southern Africa. Please email me at elizabethninomiya@flysaa.com with the details. ;-)
  • Are you offering media rates?
  • Hi Simon... As long as the trip involves South African Airways, you should be fine :-)
