Many visitors to the Yellowhammer State head for the Gulf coast beaches and Mobile. But there are plenty of great destinations upstate, too, including Birmingham for its Civil Rights-era history. Huntsville for its space-industry complex, and Tuscaloosa thanks to its gracious 19th-century architecture (it was the state capital from 1826 to 1846), museums, culture, an ancient Mississippian archaological site, and nightlife (it's a college town, after all.
