A tribute to my friend, the late travel media icon Arthur Frommer

The legendary U.S. travel journalist and entrepreneur Arthur Frommer passed away November 18 at the age of 95. Born in Virginia and with an early boyhood in a small town in Missouri, Arthur was a lawyer who became a pioneering and great travel journalist, and who will be remembered as having helped open the joys of travel to the masses. While serving in the U.S. Army in Europe in the 1950s, he got the travel bug, came out with a travel guide for servicemen, and followed up in 1957 with…

What do you wear to Seven Magic Mountains?

Seven Magic Mountains is an art installation located in the Nevada desert, and the weather can be quite hot and dry. Therefore, it is recommended to wear comfortable and breathable clothing, such as shorts, t-shirts, and sandals or sneakers. You may also want to bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. It's also a good idea to bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated. While there is no strict dress code, it's important to dress appropriately for the weather and…

  • Simon & Baker, it's an extremely broad-beamed traditional Turkish sailboat, generally about 45-50 feet in length (hey folks, correct me if that figure is wrong). Nowadays they're redesigned belowdecks with three or four passenger cabins, and people charter them to sail the Turkish coast.
  • Hi Ed,

    What's a gulet? E

I get the feeling it's on a gulet. Contact cornelis@flaka.nl.
  • I'm flying out of Sydney next Monday to the UK with Emirates - to Newcastle. There and around the North East part of England (Durham, Teesdale, Hartelpool etc) for Tall Ships race event and then a stopover two nights and one day in Dubai - someone's gotta do it. Follow my trip on my blog - getupandgomagazine.blogspot.com
  • Oh don't mind me, I'm at that grumpy stage of writing, whacking all the details into a massive, massive it-could-be-a-book file and then have to get the chisels out to start hacking.

I really don't get how and why people get their noses out of joint over this posting. Cripes, how often do you send a query to a magazine and never hear anything. This man is launching a new title. I've done that and know how difficult and time-consuming it is.

I'm frankly surprised he only got 50 responses, but 50 is still a lot of wade through. And those 50 are only for one position. I should expect he has others to fill, so probably has several hundred to wade through. I've been in that position and after a while all the resumes and pitches start to look the same. I'm glad I'm not on the receiving end. It's mind-numbing work.
  • Hi Allan - sorry, didn't realise the discussion pages were closed. Have put up a redacted version of the text in the discussion forum on here, headed 'Conversations over luxury travel magazine work offer...'
  • Sarah - I couldn't open the link. I'm not a member of that group and I can't see which group it is to join. (I'm on deadline and don't have a lot of time or patience right now - the piece I'm working on is laying there like a lump of shit right now. Madness trying to get 18 communities into 4000 words!)
