A tribute to my friend, the late travel media icon Arthur Frommer

The legendary U.S. travel journalist and entrepreneur Arthur Frommer passed away November 18 at the age of 95. Born in Virginia and with an early boyhood in a small town in Missouri, Arthur was a lawyer who became a pioneering and great travel journalist, and who will be remembered as having helped open the joys of travel to the masses. While serving in the U.S. Army in Europe in the 1950s, he got the travel bug, came out with a travel guide for servicemen, and followed up in 1957 with…

What do you wear to Seven Magic Mountains?

Seven Magic Mountains is an art installation located in the Nevada desert, and the weather can be quite hot and dry. Therefore, it is recommended to wear comfortable and breathable clothing, such as shorts, t-shirts, and sandals or sneakers. You may also want to bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. It's also a good idea to bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated. While there is no strict dress code, it's important to dress appropriately for the weather and…

  • Haven't a clue. It was bad enough in the olden days of print when a passage from an article was lifted first with attribution and then inadvertently through ignorance or haste with none. Now with the proliferation of ethically clueless Inter-webbers/bloggers it looks hopeless without some big brotherish policing. Most of us are too busy trying to land paying outlets to do it ourselves and googling yourself doesn't work if they don't use your name. Perhaps some 9-year-old can come up with a software that shocks the fingers of anyone lifting copy inappropriately.
  • P.S. I'm hoping someone else can come up with some practicable answers to Max's ultimate question: "And what can we as a profession do to help stem the tide of irresponsible journalism"--i.e. plagiarism?
  • Max, as the new Ethics Chair of SATW I have to turn in my first annual report next month. Thanks for posting those questions; I'll include these issues in the discussion. (And yes, I have seen my writing and even my photos plagiarized--in print as well as online.)
  • Hey fellow journalists, I'm working on the launch of a new Website and blog, www.LatinFlyer.com and www.LatinFlyerBlog.com, that are dedicated to travel to Latin America (including Mexico, Central and South America and the Caribbean). In addition to articles, the content features videos and photography. So if you happen to be headed to (or based in) a destination in that part of the world and are looking for an additional outlet for some interesting story ideas, let me know!
  • Did you all catch yesterday's article in the NY Observer about plagiarism at the NY Times? Seems cut-and-paste has become the disease du jour among certain writers. You've never done it, of course, but have you, in your capacities as writers, ever had your work plagiarized online or elsewhere? And as editors, have you had writers submit articles that you subsequently discovered had been lifted from other sources? How did you deal with it? And what can we as a profession do to help stem the tide of irresponsible journalism?
  • Wondering if any group members are Austin, TX based or if anyone's attending SXSW this year. We'd love to invite you to our three events! If you'd like more details, please comment back in our post in the discussion forum inside this group.

  • Thanks, Kristi; quite right. Just to clarify, it's not ideas for destinations I'm seeking (I've been visiting Europe even longer than I've been a travel writer), but agencies or companies that arrange home stays unrelated to language classes or such.
  • Amsterdam is another fun (and safe) destination with cultural and evening attractions.
  • As one who was once in a similar position, I'd like to suggest Istanbul. It's Western enough for her to cope with yet Eastern enough for her to feel she is in a whole new world - which she is wherever she chooses to go. And Turkish men are charming and adore American women. She can be the belle of the ball if she wants to.
