Of course, depending on where you go, travelling while LGBT+ can be a challenge, particularly if you're with a same-sex partner and/or if you are visibly queer. Sadly, there are still many countries where being gay is still…

LGBTQ+ Danger Index rates countries for both locals and visitors

Just came across a Guardian piece published a few weeks ago with some interesting findings from something called the LGBTQ+ Danger Index, which ranks the world's 150 most-visited countries using eight factors, including legalized same-sex marriage, worker protection and whether, based on Gallup poll findings, it is a good place to live. How should travelers/travel industry respond to Brunei's barbarism against gays?

Many voices in the civilized world have been speaking out in horrified outrage at Brunei's new edict  decreeing death by stoning for gay sex, and numerous individuals and institutions joining a boycott. • Interesting item I caught this morning, posted in yesterday's pressofatlanticcity.com. Apparently they've finally caught on in Atlantic City, NJ that we're "among the most lucrative forms of tourism," so suddenly they're launching a humongo GLBT marketing program, bringing Lance Bass and Jai Rodriguez down to host parties (starting with a big "Out in Atlantic City" bash in late September), and yadda yadda.

Oh well -- whatever it takes, right?

  • Hi, Peter! Thanks for that observation. I wonder why in the world it would then be make the top five on HostelBookers.com -- and apparently not just the top five, but number one! In what way did you find it bad? I'll probably be doing a gay Madrid blog post at some point soonish and it would be helpful to know. Do you like the other Madrid hostel on the list, the Pizarro?

How are things on the beautiful Costa del Sol these days?

    Cheers....DA
  • Gay hostal puerto del Sol is expensive and bad. In my experience a bad choice
  • Just happened to come across a list of the top five gay hostels, put out by HostelBookers.com:

    1. Gay Hostel Puerta del Sol, Madrid
    2. El Misti Hostel Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro
    3. Gay Pizarro Hostal, Madrid
    4. Elements Hostel, San Francisco
    5. London Hostel Gay House, London
