6 of the world´s most atmospheric cycling races for traveling fans

Freerange Stock Diehard aficionados of competitive cycling of course think nothing of flying across countries and even oceans to witness blockbuster races like the Tour de France, the Giro d´Italia, and the Vuelta a España. But of course there are dozens of other high-powered international races across the world, and probably hundreds of regional ones. I got to thinking about continents beyond Europe, as well as races which most give visitors a flavor of the countries in which they take place,…

Why Tahiti temporarily became an unlikely sports travel destination this past summer

The Terramar Project Fairly mountainous and surrounded by coral reefs, the archipelago´s largest and most populous island (with some 192,000 inhabitants) is its cultural and economic heart.  On the northwest coast, its capital Papeete (pop. just under 27,000) is, to quote Tahiti Tourism´s own website “not the prettiest of towns,” but it does have some interesting corners, including the landscaped waterfront, the cathedral, the presidential palace, the Sunday-morning Papeete market, a pearl…

New York's Baseball Hall of Fame in 'Nostalgia Front & Center in Some U.S. Museums & Eateries'

Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame Louis Kaplan is channeling his childhood.  While a youngster, he collected baseball cards which he stored in boxes and treasured as souvenirs of the USA's favorite pastime.  Decades later, he’s reliving that time while visiting the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, upstate New York.  Opportunities to recapture memories from the past are of course not limited to baseball, nor to New York. From Coca-Cola to cars, movies to museums,…

  • With the FIFA World Cup about to kick off in a week (June 11th in Mexico City and June 12th in Toronto and Los Angeles), the picture in the three host countries is radically different. Canada, of course, is unsurprisingly pretty peachy and controversy-free. Mexico´s main issue is a precarious security situation in several parts of the country, but the expert consensus is that drug cartel violence is very unlikely to affect the games because the cartels have always avoided targeting tourists; a bigger worry appears to be potential disruptions from protests and strikes. In any case, the Mexican authorities are mobilizing massive security operations to ensure everything goes as smoothly as possible.

But the biggest World Cup worries center around the United States, mostly relating to hotel bookings being way down and many international visitors staying away (and in some cases opting to switch to attendance in Canada or Mexico) for various reasons, including:

    - Outrageous price gouging on tickets, local hotel rates, and in some cases transportation (for example, round-trip train tickets from New York to the matches at MetLife Stadium were initially a whopping $150, which after understandable outrage was reduced to a still ridiculous $98.

    - Outrageously jacked up hotel rates.

    - Visa delays and runarounds, as well as fears of harassment at airport entry points, as well as intimidating ICE presence at airports and at the matches themselves.

So it will be interesting to see how this all plays out in June and July. Will it all work out, or will it be chaos and/or a dud? Watch this space...
