Reaffirming the assurance of the Government to bring all the students belonging to Scheduled Tribe (ST) category under scholarship schemes, Minister for Social Welfare, Sakina Itoo has said that Central Government has agreed to enhance the quota of the scholarship for the State and approved all pending cases submitted earlier.
The Minister was speaking after disbursing post-matric scholarship cheques among the students of ST category here at Polytechnic College, today. As many as 84 students of polytechnic college and Govt Medical College, Jammu were given scholarship.
The Minister said that the issue of removal of quota limits in scholarships cases fixed by the Centre was taken up with Union Minister for Water Resources and Minority Affairs, Salman Khurshid recently in a meeting at New Delhi following which he agreed to sanction all pending cases of pre-matric, post-matric and merit-cum-means scholarships submitted for approval.
She said 5648 students have been brought under the scheme this year and the concerned officers have been asked to submit all the pending cases to the Centre in time.
The Minister said that education is primary requirement for development and advised students to take full interest in their studies. She said " present era is the age of competition and students should prepare themselves fully to become master of their destiny. She said " it is merit which decides the lot of the student" ,adding that high merit pledges best lucrative jobs.
Ms Sakina said that provision of free books to the ST students has been stopped by the Centre and assured the students that the matter would again be taken up with the Union Ministry to restore this facility for university students.
Among others, Director Technical Education, A.K. Sahu, Director Tribal Affairs, Ali Raza, Principal Govt. Polytechnic, Malik, Programme Officer, ICDS, Sunita Sethi were present on the occasion.
