Predators of the Masai Mara

9008696653?profile=original

The future of the Masai Mara game reserve and the continued existence of the abundant game inside it is directly dependent on the Masai communities living around it. The pastoralist Masai community keep herds of cattle, sheep and goats as a pride of wealth and their main source of daily livelihood. They also keep donkeys as beasts of burden. Their large herds of cattle can graze up to some interior parts of the reserve. If no care is taken, this can prove to be a threat to drive away the wild

When thinking African wildlife safaris, many agree that one of the most exciting spectacles on earth is the great wildebeest migration that occurs between  Tanzania’s national park and Kenya’s  Masai Mara.  The wildebeest, zebra and antelope make the  constant migration from one end of the wilderness to the other. This movement is driven by their need for pasture and drinking water.  And as the over 1.9 million animals move northwards from the Serengeti into Masai Mara, they are hunted all the t

Trading Insults with an Angry Lion

EcoTraining wilderness camp, Mashatu, Botswana, Thursday 12 January 2012, is a day that will be etched upon my memory forever. I ran out of toothpaste.

Not life changing in itself, I agree, but it was the first in a series of interesting events that day which included having lasagne for supper (my favourite) and being charged by a lion.

Perhaps I should say a bit more about the lion thing. At approximately 06:00 that morning, a small group of us under the expert guidance of Chantelle chanced upon

Australia Zoo was established in 1970 by Robert Irwin, as the ‘Beerwah Reptile and Fauna Park’, on the grounds of a former macadamia nut farm. From an early age, his son, Steve, helped his father with the animals, both looking after them, and rescuing and relocating them.

As most people know, Steve became a familiar face all around the world with his excellent TV series ‘Crocodile Hunter’. Through this programme, viewers became very familiar with Australia Zoo, as it had been renamed. And, of cou

I never thought I would see a blue whale outside of the Smithsonian museum. In fact, I thought they were almost extinct. On January 23, 2012 I saw four pairs of them. Blue Whaleswere not even on my bucket list. When we started doing research on Sri Lanka we found out that about ten years ago, fisherman, and people living on a cliff overlooking the southern tip of Sri Lanka started reporting seeing amazingly large “fish”. Soon, scientists showed up and the “‘fish” turned out to be actually mamals.

Sri Lanka Elephant Orphanage

Admit it. It is tough to visualize an elephant orphanage.  Visions of elephants in shorts like Oliver Twist asking “please sir may I have another” were short lived in my great expectations, however they were not replaced with anything very clear.

Originally set up by the government to care for abandoned or orphaned elephants it has now turned into a major tourist attraction and seems to be the economic cornerstone of a small village outside of Kandy named Pinnewala.

It has its critics. The critics

What to do in La Jolla, California? The most popular free activity in the village - especially if you're traveling with kids - is visiting the seals at The Children's Pool. The rope barrier that went up here recently indicates the beginning of the pupping season for the colony of harbor seals who call the cove home.

While the pups aren't usually born until March and April, the rope keeps onlookers at a safe distance from the rookery while the seals are most vulnerable. All onlookers, that is,

Australia's Kangaroo Island

9008668076?profile=original

Kangaroo Island, or ‘KI’, as it’s known locally, is more noted for what it hasn’t got than for what it has. Unlike mainland Australia, rabbits and foxes were never introduced, so the indigenous wildlife has less competition for survival.

Another thing the island doesn’t have is something a Scottish friend once called ‘The Way of the Island’. There’s no sense of being on an island; in many places, you can climb to a high point and see nothing but ‘bush’ in any direction.

That catches many visitors
