Agra is located on the banks of the Yamuna River in western Uttar Pradesh. Sikander Lodhi, the ruler of the Lodhi dynasty, founded the modern city of Agra in the 16th century. When Shah Jahan ascended to the Mughal throne, Agra reached the pinnacle of Mughal architecture. The Emperor Shah Jahan coined the name in honour of his grandfather Akbar.
