Next time you’re in Russia’s capital and require an adventure fix without leaving the big city, go for an urban expedition at central Moscow’s Ekspeditsiya, whose roaring open fire, pine tree, canoe, running stream beneath the floor, and real rescue helicopter will whisk you on an eponymous expedition to the wilds of Siberia. And so should chef Leon Ek’s menu: disguised as a photograph album of all kinds of awe-inspiring al fresco adventures, it offers the traditional food of Russia’s Arctic and Siberian peoples – a feast of exotic delicacies such as polar partridge, elk, wild duck, Kamchatka scallops, reindeer, muksun (a Siberian whitefish), caribou — or how about pony with a side order of fried fern? You can order from the spit or cook it yourself on a heated stone brought to your table (which reminds us — fern notwithstanding, vegetarians should probably avoid this carnival of carnivorism at all costs). Wash it all down with a hefty raft of flavored aquavits, which should put you nicely in the mood for the “Salon de Gusto” downstairs, featuring live jazz music. To really complete the experience, get your pores opened up before or after dinner in the traditional Russian banya (steam sauna) downstairs—beatings with birch branches optional, as always.
Priyatnava appetita!
