Everest Base Camp is one of the most famous travel destinations in Nepal and around the world. There are two different base camps on Mt. Everest, known as the north base camp and the south base camp. The north is in Tibet (China), and the south is located in Nepal’s Khumbu Region. In this post, we talk about how to reach Everest Base Camp from Kathmandu.
The most popular way to reach Everest Base Camp from Kathmandu is through a trekking trip. There are several trekking packages that bring you to this popular place. Everest Base Camp Trek, Three High Passes Trek, Helicopter Return EBC Trek, and Cho La Pass Trek are the major packages to visit the world’s highest mountain base camp from Kathmandu.
The most popular trekking entry to Everest Base Camp is from Lukla, where you can reach it by taking a short, adventurous flight from Kathmandu or Ramechhap. After landing at Lukla Airport, you start walking to Phakding on the same day, then trek to Namche, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, and Gorakshep before the Base Camp hike.
If you have a longer holiday or are scared to take a flight to Lukla, you can also use an overland route to go to Everest Base Camp from Kathmandu. You can drive to Jiri by bus and start walking through Shivalaya, Bhandar, Sette, Junbesi, Nunthala, Kharikhola, Paiya, Surki, and Chaurikharka, and then join the trail in Chheplung, which goes from Lukla. After meeting the Lukla to Everest Base Camp route in Chheplung, you stay with a classic trekking itinerary up to the base camp and Kala Patthar.
Another overland route to EBC is from Salleri or Phaplu. You can drive in a jeep to Salleri from Kathmandu, or fly and start walking through Taksindo, Kharikhola, Surki, and Chheplung. It is a new route started a few years ago because of the new road construction.
If you cannot trek in the high elevations and cold temperatures or do not have enough time to visit Everest Base Camp from Kathmandu, you can also reach there directly. The Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour is the quickest and easiest way to travel to EBC from Kathmandu. You will land at several vantage points during this scenic tour and explore the beauties of the Everest Himalayas.
