Let's start off with one of the best and most distinctive budget options. Located in vibrant Amsterdam Noord, a short ferry ride from Centraal Station and the various sites and attractions of the historic city centre, this 101-year-old former Roman Catholic church is now a hybrid hotel/hostel of 106 private rooms (from 54 euros) and 50 stacked private "pods" (from 24€). It's good for traveling with kids, on business, or alone, as well as for students and young people looking for inexpensive lodging. Amenities and services include: free high-speed WiFi; a bar/lounge, breakfast buffet, taxi service, 24-hour security, baggage storage; a 24-hour front desk; complimentary coffee and tea; and special diet menus.
Adults only, this is another budget-friendly star (with rates as low as 43€, depending of course on time of year and whether or not you take a breakfast option), a short stroll away from the city-center museums and other attractions. The 30 cute little capsules" on two floors are charmingly decorated and come with ensuite bathrooms. There's also a breakfast room, a bar, a coffee shop, free high-speed Internet, and laundry facilities.
Also very centrally and conveniently located - in an 18th-century canal house right on central A'dam's iconic main canal the Keizergracht - this small, midrange boutique property is up the price scale from our previous two (as in upwards of 150€ for a standard room). There's no restaurant, but travelers love the vibe and service, and amenities include complimentary breakfast, a welcome bottle of bubbly, bathrooms with rain showers (and some with bubble baths), 24-hour front desk, laundry facilities, and a garden for hanging out.

At 157 years old, one of Amsterdam's grandes dames - run as of this past April by the luxury Anantara group - is full service four-star in all senses, with rates to match (upwards of 300€ for a standard room). Located on a major central Amsterdam hub, Dam Square, the 402-room-and-suite Kras is a mix of the traditional (such as its grand Winter Garden, above) and the modern (rooms, bar, spa), with two restaurants (one of which the White Room, is helmed by three-Michelin-starred chef Jacob Jan Boerma); a bar/lounge; room service; a fitness room; and a spa with four treatment rooms and sauna/steam room.
Also very centrally located in the "canal belt" near multiple attractions, travelers say the Mercier is a great experience for the money (from 54€), with charming, cozy décor that mixes retro with postmodern; friendly, helpful service; and nice touches in the 46 rooms like heated bathroom floors and fantastic Bluetooth speakers. There's a restaurant, bar/lounge, and garden, as well as a 24-hour front desk, laundry service, concierge service and luggage storage.
Mercure Amsterdam City Hotel
A member of the French Mercure chain, this more modern property is located on the Amstel River in the Westport harbor and business district and an easy metro ride from city center. It's especially suitable for business travelers (and if you want to try your luck, the Holland Casino Amsterdam is nearby!). The 152 rooms are spacious, comfortable, and reasonably priced (from 96€), and amenities include a bar, restaurant (including outdoor tables on a nice garden), coffee shop, onsite parking, business center, fitness center, sauna, and steam bath.

This "aparthotel" is located just 15 minutes from Dam Square and within even closer walking distance of cool Rembrandtplein (great for cafés, restaurants, and a nighttime clubbing hotspot) and several interesting museums, including Rembrandt's 17th-century house. There's a cool restaurant/bar with communal tables; a game room; plant-filled outdoor terraces; a tretment room for massages; laundry facilities; a "living room" for hanging out; and onsite parking. Loft-style studio apartments here start at 109€.
