Driving in Paradise - Panama

When one thinks of paradise, Panama has to be near the top of the list.

In the 90s Costa Rica fast became the chic eco destination for Americans, Canadians and Europeans.  Many expats started buying land and relocating. In the last ten years, a new nirvana was discovered, Panama.

Countries with both beach and jungle are especially appealing. The world is full of small countries where you can view nature and perhaps surf in the same day. Panama fits the bill.

No, You’re not in Miami

The best means of transport in a small to medium-size nation is to drive it. There is nothing is nothing like quenching your thirst for wanderlust than by taking a road trip. With 1,000 miles of coastline, 1,500 islands, close to 1,000 different species of birds, a small population of only three million inhabitants, you will never run out of new adventures in Panama. Eco tourists can view so much within short distances. Panama is slightly smaller than the U.S. state of South Carolina. Panama City with its high towers, and high rise condos may look and feel a bit like Miami, with the hustle and bustle feel of a big city, complete with traffic jams. But beyond the capital lies a paradise to discover. Panama is an easy nation to navigate by car. A small country filled with nature, a new adventure is never far away. Distances are short, with relatively safe roads. You’re never too far from the flora and fauna that makes this country such a precious place on the planet. The crossroads between Central and South America.

The ultra-modern Pan-American Highway is a four lane roadway linking Panama City to Colon, Panama’s second largest city. While bad roads and bad drivers still exists, programs outlined by the government and the department of transit indicate that driving fatalities are decreasing. Improving roads and signage to attract travelers to points of interest is the goal of the government, making Panama easily drivable and accessible to tourists.
