Wait, isn´t India majority Hindu and large-minority Muslim, with Christians only about two to three percent of the population? Absolutely, but as with other Asian countries like Japan, Christmas has become a cultural phenomenon that transcends religions, and Indians love a good festival! So apart from places like Goa, Kerala, northeastern states like Nagaland, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Manipur, and parts of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, which hold large church services, street decorations, processions, and family feasts, in large cities such as DelhiMumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru (Bangalore), Chennai, and Kolkata you´ll see shopping malls and hotels pull out the stops with holiday lights, decor, and music, as well as holiday markets and concerts and other public events. Even non-Christians exchange gifts and throw holiday parties, and there are even Indian Christmas foods such as sorpotel, bebinca, appam, plum cake, and a variety of regional sweets. Furthermore, December 25 is a national holiday, so those who don´t celebrate Christmas per se enjoy the festive atmosphere, outings, and travel. And here are eight cities and towns which are India´s most festive for Yuletide

Chennai (Madras) – Warm, Joyful & Cultural

Down south on the Bay of Bengal in Tamil Nadu state, this city has a strong Tamil Christian heritage and hosts serene celebrations with decorated streets in areas such as Mylapore, Perambur, and Royapuram, choir and other music performances, and festive foods such as murukku, rose cookies, plum cake, biryani, and coastal seafood delicacies. San Thome Basilica and Velankanni Church attract huge crowds for midnight mass.

Goa – Beaches, Parties, and Holiday Cheer

With one of the highest percentages of Christians in India - around 25 percent - thanks to the legacy of Portuguese colonization, this is India's most popular Christmas destination. Churches like the Basilica of Bom Jesus and the Se Cathedral host midnight masses, streets glow with lanterns, star lights, and nativity displays, and the beaches come alive with music, fireworks, and festive markets.

Kerala – A Peaceful Christmas by the Backwaters

Also with one of India´s highest populations of Christians - some 18 percent - Kerala celebrates with glowing lanterns, decorated homes, and beautiful church services, particularly in cities like Kochi (which celebrates its Cochin Carnival during this season), Kollam, and Kumarakom. And the pleasant weather and cultural programs make it a delightful holiday spot.

Kolkata – Traditional, Cultural & Joyful

Kolkata celebrates Christmas with great enthusiasm, and in its own Anglo-Indian style, especially on Park Street, which becomes India´s most famous holiday thoroughfare, festooned with lights and hosting music and food festivals. Churches like St. Paul’s Cathedral host large services, and everyone enjoy Anglo-Indian specialties like rose cookies, lard cakes, railway cutlets.

Mumbai – Grand Decorations & Festivities

India´s biggest city (some 27 million) hosts some of the country´s biggest holiday celebrations, with areas like Hill Road and Bandra coming alive with lights and markets, while malls, restaurants, and bakeries go all out with Christmas decorations. For the faithful, Mount Mary Basilica, St. Michael´s, Cloria Church, and St. Thomas Cathedral draw thousands for midnight mass. The city is also famous for its bakeries´ Christmas sweets, such as plum cake, marzipan, and kul-kuls.

New Delhi – Celebrations with Winter Magic

The national capital enjoys a beautiful blend of concerts, lit-up churches, Christmas markets, and winter food festivals. Popular spots include Connaught Place and Select Citywalk., and there are even a handful of Christmas markets such as the one at the Germany embassy. And of course Christian communities in Old Delhi and South Delhi attend mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral and other churches.

Pondicherry – Calm, Coastal, and Festive

Known for its French charm, Pondicherry celebrates Christmas with quiet elegance. The churches host peaceful midnight masses, and the streets glow with festive decorations.

  • White Town’s colonial streets are beautifully lit.

  • Franco-Tamil Catholic communities attend Mass at Sacred Heart Basilica, Notre Dame des Anges, and other heritage churches.

  • Christmas markets, beach gatherings, and a relaxed, café-filled festive atmosphere.

  • Food reflects French-Tamil fusion: bûche de Noël appears alongside local curries and seafood.

Shillong – Yuletide Wonderland in the Northeast

A "hill station" in the highlands of northeastern Meghalaya state is perhaps India´s most "Christmassy" city of all, becoming a city of lights along its main streets and offering a mix of music concerts, local performances, and delicious food. The city's churches, especially the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians, welcome thousands of visitors each year. And even though it doesn´t snow, the cold weather gives Shillong and extra wintry feel appropriate to the season.
