The best bear viewing in Alaska is incomplete without seeing Inland brown bears. They are often called "grizzlies", but near the ocean, they are called coastal brown bears. The bears move around depending on the season and time of year, which can affect what kind of plane you need to reach them.
Chinitna Bay is a coastal area with lots of sedge grass, bright salt marshes, and tidal flats full of clams. In May and June, you can watch big male bears, females with cubs, young bears, and lone bears as they go about their daily activities like searching for food, breeding, and just being bears. Chinitna Bay can also be reached by a wheeled bush plane from Homer Airport.
Lake Clark National Park, Katmai National Park, or any place in between that can be reached by helicopter… from May to September, the bears follow the salmon as they return to the rivers to breed and swim upstream. Your pilot or guide will know the perfect spot to land on the day of your trip.
