12-Day Everest Base Camp Trek from Kathmandu

12-Day Everest Base Camp Trek from Kathmandu

The 12-day Everest Base Camp Trek is one of the most famous trekking trips in Nepal and in the world. It is a classic itinerary that begins in Lukla with a short scenic flight from Kathmandu and ends with a fly-out from Lukla at the end after the base camp and Kala Patthar visits.

Trekking to Everest Base Camp offers pristine mountain views, captivating landscapes, magnificent valleys, rivers, waterfalls, wildlife, cultural monuments, and more. You will be walking through typical Sherpa villages and inside a natural UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sagarmatha National Park.

You fly into Lukla from Kathmandu or Ramechhap and walk to Phakding on the first day of the trek. On the second day, you trek to Namche Bazaar and also stay the third day in Namche. You hike to Hotel Everest View for altitude practice and go to Tengboche on the fourth day. You will see magnificent views of Mt. Ama Dablam, Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and many other high peaks from Tengboche Hill. You can visit Tengboche Monastery in the evening and join the regular offerings with the monks.

You trek to Dingboche on the fifth day, take the second acclimatization rest, and hike to Nangkartshang Hill for the altitude practice on the sixth day. After a well-acclimatized period, you walk to Lobuche on the seventh day. You cross Thukla Pass on this day and see many memorials of dead climbers on the top of Thukla.

The eighth day of the Everest Base Camp Trek is the most important because you are reaching the main destination. You walk around 3 hours to Gorakshep in the morning, have a quick lunch, and then hike to Everest Base Camp and back to Gorakshep to sleep. You cannot sleep at the base camp because there is no lodge.

You hike to Kala Patthar early in the morning on the ninth day from Gorakshep, which takes around two hours. You see 360° mountain views, including the world’s highest mountain, Everest, and the fourth highest mountain, Lhotse, from Kala Patthar, and hike back to Gorakshep for breakfast. After breakfast, you start returning to Pheriche through Lobuche and Thukla.

You trek back to Namche Bazaar on the tenth day via Pangboche, Tengboche, Sanasa, and Kyanjuma, and on the eleventh day to Lukla. You will fly out on the twelfth morning with unforgettable memories of the Everest Base Camp Trek.

September to November in the autumn and March to May in the spring are the best times to trek to Everest Base Camp. The weather and temperature are tolerable, and perfect visibility applies during these times in the Everest Region.

You can also complete the Everest Base Camp Trek in 9 days if you do not have time for a 12-day itinerary. You follow the classic itinerary up to the Base Camp and Kala Patthar and fly out on a helicopter from Gorakshep directly to Kathmandu on the ninth day, which is the Helicopter Return EBC Trek.

You can also luxuriously explore the Everest Himalayas if you cannot walk in the high altitudes and cold temperatures. Or, those who lack time for a long mountain trek in the Everest Region and love to see the world’s highest mountain from a close distance can book the Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour.
