Located on the south coast of the ten-island archipelago's largest island, Santiago (and home to its capital, Praia), Cidade Velha is a UNESCO World Heritage listed because it's the site of Ribeira Grande, the first European colonial settlement in the tropics, founded by the Poruguese in 1462. Landmarks here include a pair of churches, this fortress, and Pillory Square, with an ornate 16th-century pillar.
