Most visitors to subterranean Paris go to its catacombs. But next to the Pont d'Alma, the Musée des Égouts - which closed in 2018 and reopened in 2021 after a renovation - showcases a rather smellier yet more critical side of the city's underground precincts: its 2,600 kilometers (1,616 miles) of sewers, developed throughout the 19th century. This is a photo I took back in 2017 before it closed for renovation - so what the crap, I should go back on my next visit!
