In its heyday, Oranjestad was one of the Caribbean’s most happening ports. These days it’s a laid-back settlement of just over a thousand souls, divided into an Upper Town and Lower Town and including a slew of 18th-century, classically Caribbean wooden houses, including the oldest, the Gezaghebber House, once home to the colony’s lieutenant governor.
