The ruins of old St.-Pierre, Martinique

One of the island's most compelling sights is located in St.-Pierre, a town on the west coast about a 40-minute drive north of Fort-de-France. This year marks the 120th anniversary of a massive eruption by Mt. Pelée (visible here in the background), when the previous iterations of this town, founded in 1635 and considered Martinique's cultural capital and "the Paris of the Caribbean," was buried in the 20th century's worst volcanic disaster, killing up to 30,000.
