A day's travel from both Timbuktu and capital Bamako (but you can get here by plane in two hours), the town of Gao is best known as home to this late-15th-century tomb of Askia Mohammad I, one of the more prominent emperors of the Sonhai Empire, which dominated a huge swath of West Africa in the 15th and 16th centuries.
