Malawi's other World Heritage Site besides Lake Malawi is located in a forested landscape studded with massive granite outcroppings near the town of Dedza on a plateau in the south central part of the country, just an hour's drive south of capital Lilongwe. It's Africa's biggest cluster of Stone Age art inscribed on rock - some 127 instances - which hasn't been conclusively dated but certainly precedes the arrival of the local Chewa people some 2,000 years ago, and was continued by them into the 20th century; female motifs are especially prevalent, and have ritual significance. If you're interested, it's best to hire a local guide to both get you to and explain the art.
