The royal hill and complex of Ambohimanga, Madagascar

Covering 147 acres, this traditional fortified royal settlement on a hill a bit over a half hour's drive northeast of Anantanarivo dates back to the early 18th century, when the Merina Kingdom (1540-1897) dominated most of the island. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site which in addition to being a place of pilgrimage for locals is also a must for visitors to Madagascar.
