This modest three-story hotel built in 1935 was made famous by Ernest Hemingway, who stayed here from 1935 to 1937, during which time he is said to have worked on the novel To Have and Have Not. Also noted for its rowdy bar, in subsequent years the Angler attracted celebrities including Lucille Ball, Jimmy Buffett, and Colorado senator Gary Hart (whos 1976 presidential bid collapsed after being photographed with Donna Rice on a local boat, the Monkey Business). Sadly, the hotel burned down in 2009, also claiming the life of its then owner, Julian Brown.
