  • Hi Emma,

Here are some activities you can do:
    1. Visit the zoo and night safari
    2. Take a walk through Little India (I think it's the most "Asian" part of Singapore!)
    3. Go cycling in Pulau Ubin (it's one of the few rare rustic and village-like places left in Singapore)
    4. Visit one of the housing estates (these are our version of suburbs) e.g. Ang Mo Kio, Toa Payoh, Queenstown (older estates) or Tampines, Jurong West, Bishan (newer estates)
    5. EAT!

Which brings me to your next question - restaurants. There's a great variety of food in Singapore and eating is a national pastime. As in any Asian country, street food is one of the greatest thing. So you should try out the local food in the hawker centres and coffee shops (you'll find lots in the housing estates). They are very cheap. You can have a meal for less than USD5-10 and there's so much variety, you don't need to repeat any dish for a month!

Some restaurants you can try out:
    1. Crystal Jade (they have different restaurants for Cantonese and Northern Chinese cuisine - both are good)
    2. Muthu's Curry @ Race Course Road (Indian food)
    3. Tambuan Mas (Indonesian food)
    4. Cedele (soups, pasta, sandwiches, all-day breakfast)
    5. Indochine (Vietnamese, Laotian and food from the Indochina region)
    6. Ma Maison (Japanese-style western food)
    7. Tampopo @ Liang Court (Japanese food)
    8. Da Paolo (Italian food)
    9. Straits Kitchen @ Hyatt Hotel (if you want to taste a variety of local food in one sitting, this is the high-class version of local food)

    Hope this is helpful! =)
  • Hi Kerry,

I am a travel writer from San Francisco. I'll be staying in Singapore for four weeks in March-April. Can you share some insider tips on activities and restaurants I could use in my story?
    Thanks, Emma Krasov
  • Greetings, Kerry, and a hearty welcome to our site! It's so great to have you with us -- and we think you'll find it productive as well as interesting and enjoyable.

To get the most out of our site, you may want to take a few minutes to join even several more of our many groups which you might find of particular interest, such as Spain, India, our Chinese Language/Culture Club, and plenty of others covering many topics and most destinations throughout the world.

FYI, on your profile you'll see a blue bar marked "Text Box," which you can turn into a box containing not just text but also photos and even videos about yourself, your interests and your travels.

Finally, if you would, please be so kind as to spread the word among your travel-interested friends, family, and associates. It's fast and easy to use our "INVITE" function above left on the navigation bar to enter e-mails (even your whole list at once!).

Many thanks for joining us, Kerry; we wish you an outstanding rest of 2009 and look forward to hearing more from you...!
