GUEST OF HONOR: PETER MARTINS
This year the Society is celebrating and honoring a most Remarkable Scandinavian Achievement! Our Guest of Honor 2016 is Mr. Peter Martins, Ballet Master in Chief and Artistic Leader of New York City Ballet.
In 1967 Martins received an emergency call from NYCB – the company needed a last minute replacement for the title role Apollo! Martins accepted – not knowing what he was getting into – and that was the beginning! Next year 2017 will mark the 50th Anniversary of Peter Martins’ association with New York City Ballet; as a dancer, choreographer, director and artistic leader! Join us in celebrating this Remarkable Scandinavian Achievement!
About Peter Martins
Martins studied at the School of the Royal Danish Ballet and danced with the company from 1965-1969. In 1967 Martins received an emergency call from NYCB; they were looking for a last minute replacement for the title role Apollo for a performance at the Edinburgh Festival. Martins accepted – not knowing what he was getting into – this was the beginning!
Martins performed as a guest artist with NYCB for three years before he joined as a Principal Dancer in 1970. He was already an international star when he joined the company. He danced a tremendous variety of roles over the years and had several roles created especially for him. It was Balanchine’s own choice that Martins one day should run NYCB. When Martins retired in 1983 he became, with Jerome Robbins, Co-Master Ballet in Chief. Martins has since 1990 been the sole Director and Artistic Leader of NYCB. Martins has also worked extensively as a choreographer and has created a large number of ballets for NYCB. Mr. Martins was awarded the title of Knight of The Order of Dannebrog by H.R.H. Queen Margrethe II of Denmark in 1983.
