Our Maldives Vacations and Honeymoons

The Maldives is one of the world’s most beautiful island destinations, dotting the Indian Ocean like a natural string of pearls.

Located off the south-west coast of India, the Maldives consists of around 1200 atolls (islands) and there over 100 secluded private island resorts to choose from. Resorts are accessed by a short, scenic seaplane or speedboat ride from the capital, Male, the country’s primary gateway. The Maldives is also the world’s lowest country, located on top of a vast underwater mountain range.

Asap Holidays offers a variety of Maldives vacation packages. If you are looking for a romantic escape, a relaxing vacation with access to a world-class spa, or a family vacation, this is the place. But this is also a country well suited to the more active type of traveller. Imagine adding windsurfing or a dive with whale sharks to your honeymoon memories!

10234985879?profile=RESIZE_710x

Why choose a Maldives vacation?

The first thing that will strike you about the Maldives is their exceptional natural beauty. It’s not surprising that honeymooners and those seeking a glamorous tropical getaway have long had the country at the top of their wish lists. Beyond the five and six-star resorts, some Maldives hotels cater to families, to water sports enthusiasts looking for great diving, snorkeling, sailing, and windsurfing, to those on a (relative) budget, or to anyone wanting a tranquil back-to-nature experience. In the Maldives, you can enjoy all of this or simply sit on the beach or the verandah of your hotel with a cocktail in your hand, watching the glorious sunsets for which the Maldives is famous. Another attraction is the fresh seafood. Restaurants and hotels here have access to some of the freshest seafood you’ll ever try, all prepared according to that restaurant’s speciality.

10234985893?profile=RESIZE_710x

Living Attractions in the Maldives

For divers, there are around 70 incredible dive sites to experience in the Maldives. The southern atolls are renowned for coral and lots of channels for spotting sharks and barracudas. The northern atolls have interesting reefs in shallower waters. The sea here is home to 1100 species of fish, five species of sea turtles, and 21 species of whales and dolphins. There are a number of wrecks dotted around where ships have floundered. Snorkeling is open to everyone who can swim.

Unlocking the Maldives Overwater Bungalow

Accommodation is not simply a room on a Maldives vacation package. Imagine having an overwater bungalow on a pier jutting out from the shore with a glass floor, under which tropical fish are swimming. Some even offer a private plunge pool on the deck. There are also villas secluded in lush vegetation or situated above a lagoon. Maldives also makes a great wedding destination or a place to renew your vows or celebrate a wedding anniversary. Couples can have the ceremony anywhere they wish - some weddings have even been performed underwater.

For added variety, you can go snorkeling or diving on a different island. It is also possible to reserve a seaplane sightseeing flight and have a picnic.

So, why not lift your quality of life with a stay in this beautiful country on one of Asap Holidays  Maldives vacation packages?

Best Time To Visit Maldives:

December to April is considered the best time to visit the Maldives as this is the summer season in the Maldives. The season is quite popular among tourists to enjoy their holidays and honeymoon, making it a heavily crowded place, as the Maldives don’t face any rainfall during these months. Due to Christmas and New Year celebrations, December sees a massive sea of people here. Hotel rates are at a peak these days, so it is better to get an all-inclusive Maldives package. Also, you can enjoy your favourite water activities and sports till the last day of April. May to November is the monsoon season, and you’ll end up facing heavy rainfall. Hotels and resorts are usually less pricey during this season, but still, it is not recommended to visit in this season, as you will not get the best experience of Maldives.

Browse through the different budget packages below

As we have mentioned earlier, the Andaman tour packages cost is dependent on a variety of factors, and you will need to understand them to choose the Andaman tour package that is best suited for your needs.

Let us discuss how to calculate your Andaman trip cost in detail:

Airfares

Airfares make a significant portion of your Andaman trip cost. Most of the travel agents offer only land packages and do not provide air ticketing services.

We at Asap Holidays have an air ticketing desk only for customers who book group packages. Though we provide flight ticketing services at request but encourage our customers to book online by themselves.

If you are planning to visit Andaman during Peak season the fares from major cities in India could range from Rs 7000 to Rs 15000 per person. We suggest you book your air tickets early to get reasonable rates.

If you plan to travel during the off-peak season, the flight rates are constant at about Rs 5000 per person.

So Book you air tickets at least two months in advance if traveling in peak season.

Hotel selection for your Andaman trip

Hotels and resort stay costs make up about 30-50% of your total package cost. If you plan your hotel choices at port Blair, havelock, and Niel island wisely, you will end up saving a lot on your package cost.

You should decide your hotel depending on what type of traveler you are

  • For couples, we always suggest booking a premium beach resort in havelock, and you can go with a standard 3-star hotel in port Blair as port Blair has more sightseeing places, and you will hardly be in your hotel room.
  • For families and groups, we suggest hotels which allow extra beds or have family rooms .this will help you reduce the price of your package a lot.
  • For solo travelers or bachelors in a group, we suggest to take standard clean hotels in both port Blair and havelock and spend more time and money exploring stuff and on adventure activities.

How many days you are spending in Andaman

The number of days you decide to spend in Andaman is the most significant factor in determining your trip cost. A quick three-day trip would cost much less than a six-day trip covering all attractions.

For people on a budget, we suggest taking a 4-day tour plan with two days in port Blair 1 day at havelock and same-day return from Niel. We can make the itinerary a bit more hectic, and you can quickly visit most of the famous attractions while keeping your entire night stays to a minimum.

This approach of a packed itinerary is only for those who are on a budget but still want to visit all the places in Andaman.

We have seen from experience that most people enjoy an Andaman tour package, which has a relaxed itinerary, and they get enough time to enjoy each location thoroughly.

What activities you plan

There are a lot of activities that are available in the Andaman Islands for visiting tourists. And generally, tour operators try to include them all in your Andaman tour package because they get good commissions from the activity providers.

While most of the activities are fun and adventurous, they are not for everyone

In our experience, we have seen that people book many activities and don't end up doing all of them and waste a lot of money. Money which could have been used to do stuff they would enjoy. For example, Many people book scuba diving for the whole group beforehand, but only a few members finally end up doing it.

We suggest that you do not include any watersport activity in your Andaman tour package and book it through your travel agent once you are at the locations. The exception is people who are sure about the activity they want to do and can book in advance.

Which of the locations you prefer

Andaman has about 20 attractions which are popular among tourists and many more remote beaches and spots where locals visit frequently.

You cannot cover them all, no matter which Andaman tour package you choose. So we have made a list of the popular destination and tips on how to choose the attraction you want to visit while keeping your Andaman tour package cost within your budget:

Andaman tour attractions and cost details

City tour of Port Blair:

Most tour operators include a city tour on the first day the guests arrive. You typically visit the small parks, zoos, and museums in port Blair city. On average, you get charged Rs 1500 for one five-seater vehicle.

While the city tour is recommended for families with children, couples and bachelors usually don't enjoy it very much. We can suggest that if you are a couple or a group of bachelors, you can skip the city tour and spend more time at Corbyn's cove beach near port Blair or visit marina park for some watersport activities like jet ski.

Cellular jail

Cellular jail is a national monument and gives you a glimpse into the Andaman's history and significance in the Indian independence struggle.

The cellular jail is a gigantic structure with a museum attached. "light and sound show " at cellular jail showcases the history of the prison and the Andaman islands in a theatrical way.

Most of our guests have given us positive reviews after visiting cellular jail. We suggest you add cellular jail to your itinerary as the entry ticket is only Rs 200, and the jail is located within the city.

Ross island

Ross Island is a tiny uninhabited island just off the coast of Port Blair city. The ross island was the old administrative capital of the British in their early days in the Andaman Islands during the 18th century.

Now the island is controlled by the Indian navy and is open for tourist. The island is famous for its old British ruins from the 18th century, which are mostly intact. The people visiting there feel like they have traveled back in time to a ghost town.

The cost of a ticket to ross island is about Rs 500, depending on the season. The last boat from ross island to Port Blair leaves at 5 pm.

Ross Island can be a fun trip for all kind of travelers, and for couples and groups who are not into archeology and history, there is a lovely beach at the rear side of ross island where you can spend quality time.

Havelock Island

Havelock island is the most popular destination for tourists travelling to the Andaman islands and for a good reason.

Havelock Island has many attractions like the famous Radha Nagar beach, Kala Patthar beach, and elephant beach. We recommend you visit Radha Nagar beach and Kala Patthar beach it will cost you about Rs 1500 for a four-wheeler.

Elephant beach requires traveling on a small boat and will cost you about Rs 1000 per person. Visit elephant beach if you have time as it is famous for its crystal clear water and snorkeling activities.

Scuba diving

Andaman is divers heaven. There are many dive schools in havelock, which conduct recreational diving for tourists. You dive up to 5mts along with a certified diver.

Diving in Andamans is safe, and it is a beautiful experience thanks to the clear waters at havelock. Though it is not for everyone and some people find it too intimidating. The cost of a 15min dive is about Rs 3000.

Andaman tour package cost reduction tips:

Try to book an Andaman tour package which includes all meals

Do not prebook the water sport activities in advance. Reach the location and then book based on weather, time available, etc

If traveling in a big group, ask your travel agent to negotiate with hotels and ferries, and provide you with a discount.

Carry all essentials for a beach destination and avoid buying stuff after you start the trip(carry sunglasses, sunscreen, towels, swimming costumes, etc.)It will be challenging to get in Andaman and also will waste your time between your tour.

Cellular Jail

Cellular Jail

The Cellular Jail, also known as Kālā Pānī ('Black Water'), was a colonial prison in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India. The prison was used by the British government for the purpose of exiling political prisoners to the remote archipelago. Many notable activists, including Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Batukeshwar Dutt, Hare Krishna Konar, Shiv Verma, Yogendra Shukla, and Sudhanshu Dasgupta were imprisoned here during the struggle for India's independence. Today, the complex serves as a national memorial monument.

9996711474?profile=original

Although the prison complex itself was constructed between 1896 and 1906, the British had been using the Andaman Islands as a prison since the days in the immediate aftermath of the Indian Rebellion of 1857.

Shortly after the rebellion was suppressed, captured prisoners were put on trial, with many of them being executed. Others were exiled for life to the Andamans to prevent them from re-offending. Two hundred rebels were transported to the islands under the custody of the jailer David Barry and Major James Pattison Walker, a military doctor who had been warden of the prison at Agra. Another 733 from Karachi arrived in April, 1868. In 1863, the Rev. Henry Fisher Corbyn, of the Bengal Ecclesiastical Establishment, was also sent out there and he set up the 'Andamanese Home' there, which was also a repressive institution albeit disguised as a charitable one. Rev. Corbyn was posted in 1866 as Vicar to St. Luke's Church, Abbottabad, and later died there and is buried at the Old Christian Cemetery, Abbottabad. More prisoners arrived from India and Burma as the settlement grew. Anyone who belonged to the Mughal royal family, or who had sent a petition to Bahadur Shah Zafar during the Rebellion was liable to be deported to the islands.

9996711493?profile=original

The remote islands were considered to be a suitable place to punish the independence activists. Not only were they isolated from the mainland, the overseas journey (kala pani) to the islands also threatened them with loss of caste, resulting in social exclusion. The convicts were also used in chain gangs to construct prisons, buildings and harbour facilities.

By the late 19th century, the independence movement had picked up momentum. As a result, the number of prisoners being sent to the Andamans grew and the need for a high-security prison was felt. From August 1889 Charles James Lyall served as home secretary in the Raj government, and was also tasked with an investigation of the penal settlement at Port Blair. He and A. S. Lethbridge, a surgeon in the British administration, concluded that the punishment of transportation to the Andaman Islands was failing to achieve the purpose intended and that indeed criminals preferred to go there rather than be incarcerated in Indian jails. Lyall and Lethbridge recommended that a "penal stage" should exist in the transportation sentence, whereby transported prisoners were subjected to a period of harsh treatment upon arrival. The outcome was the construction of the Cellular Jail, which has been described as "a place of exclusion and isolation within a more broadly constituted remote penal space."

The construction of the prison started in 1896 and was completed in 1906. The original building was a puce-coloured brick building. The bricks used to build the building were brought from Burma.

The building had seven wings, at the center of which a tower served as the intersection and was used by guards to keep watch on the inmates; this format was based on Jeremy Bentham's idea of the Panopticon. The wings radiated from the tower in straight lines, much like the spokes of a bicycle wheel.

9996711866?profile=original

Each of the seven wings had three stories upon completion. There were no dormitories and a total of 696 cells. Each cell was 4.5 by 2.7 metres in size with a ventilator located at a height of 3 metres . The name, "cellular jail", derived from the solitary cells which prevented any prisoner from communicating with any other. Also, the spokes were so designed such that the face of a cell in a spoke saw the back of cells in another spoke. This way, communication between prisoners was impossible. They were all in solitary confinement. The locks of the prison cells were designed in such a way that the inmate would never be able to reach the latch of the lock. The prison guards would lock up the inmates and throw the key of the lock inside the jail. The inmate would try to put his hand out and try to unlock the door but would never be able to do so as his hand would never reach the lock.

"The British Raj sent Indian dissidents and mutineers to a remote island penal colony in an 'experiment' that involved torture, medical tests, forced labour and, for many, death." In response to poor conditions in the prison, including the quality of prison food, numerous prisoners went on hunger strikes. Those who did were force fed by the prison authorities.

Solitary confinement was implemented as the British colonial government desired to ensure that political prisoners and revolutionaries be isolated from one another. The Andaman island served as the ideal setting for the colonial government to achieve this.

Most prisoners of the Cellular Jail were independence activists. Some inmates were Fazl-e-Haq Khairabadi, Yogendra Shukla, Batukeshwar Dutt, Babarao Savarkar, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Sachindra Nath Sanyal, Bhai Parmanand, Sohan Singh, Subodh Roy and Trailokyanath Chakravarty Several revolutionaries were tried in the Alipore Case (1908), such as Barindra Kumar Ghose, the surviving companion of Bagha Jatin, was transferred to Berhampore Jail in Bengal, before his mysterious death in 1924.

In March 1868, 238 prisoners tried to escape. By April they were all caught. One committed suicide and of the remainder Superintendent Walker ordered 87 to be hanged.

Among the records of the Government of India's Home Department, we found the Empire's response in its Orders to Provincial Governors and Chief Commissioners. "Very Secret: Regarding security prisoners who hunger strike, every effort should be made to prevent the incidents from being reported, no concessions to be given to the prisoners who must be kept alive. Manual methods of restraint are best, then mechanical when the patient resists."

Hunger strikes by the inmates in May 1933 caught the attention of the jail authorities. Thirty-three prisoners protested their treatment and sat in hunger strike. Among them were Mahavir Singh, an associate of Bhagat Singh, Mohan Kishore Namadas and Mohit Moitra. These three died due to force-feeding.9996712074?profile=original

Statue of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar at Cellular Jail.

Another two wings of the jail were demolished after India achieved independence. However, this led to protests from several former prisoners and political leaders who saw it as a way of erasing the tangible evidence of their history.

The Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital was set up in the premises of the Cellular Jail in 1963. It is now a 500-bed hospital with about 40 doctors serving the local population.

Cellular Jail was declared a National Memorial by the then Prime Minister of India, Morarji Desai on 11 February 1979.

The centenary of the jail's completion was marked on 10 March 2006. Many former prisoners were celebrated on this occasion by the Government of India.

Apart from guided tours, a sound-and-light show is also run in the evenings narrating and showcasing the trials and tribulations of the inmates. It is available in English and Hindi.

These three died due to force-feeding.1*9M94WMVMv75RnnxYgPid5Q.jpeg?profile=RESIZE_710x

Port Blair

Port Blair is the capital city of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a union territory of India in the Bay of Bengal. It is also the local administrative sub-division of the islands, the headquarters for the district of South Andaman and is the territory's only notified town.

Port Blair serves as the entry point for visiting the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Port Blair is connected with mainland India by both air and sea. It is a 2-to-3-hour flight from mainland India to Port Blair's Veer Savarkar International Airport, and 3–4 days by sea to reach Kolkata, Chennai, or Visakhapatnam from Haddo Wharf in Port Blair. It is home to several museums and a major naval base INS Jarawa of the Indian Navy, along with sea and air bases of the Indian Coast Guard, Andaman and Nicobar Police, Andaman and Nicobar Command, the first integrated tri-command of the Indian Armed Forces and the Indian Air Force.

Modern history
In 1789 the Government of Bengal established a penal colony on Chatham Island in the southeast bay of Great Andaman, named Port Blair in the honour of Archibald Blair of the East India Company. After two years, the colony moved to the northeast part of Great Andaman and was named Port Cornwallis after Admiral William Cornwallis. However, there was much disease and death in the penal colony, and the government ceased operating it in May 1796.

In 1824 Port Cornwallis was the rendezvous of the fleet carrying the army to the First Anglo-Burmese War. In the 1830s and 1840s, shipwrecked crews who landed on the Andamans were often attacked and killed by the natives, alarming the British government. In 1855, the government proposed another settlement on the islands, including a convict establishment, but the Indian Rebellion forced a delay in its construction.

However, since the rebellion provided the British with a lot of new prisoners, it made the new Andaman settlement and prison an urgent necessity. Construction began in November 1857 at the renovated Port Blair, avoiding the vicinity of a salt swamp which seemed to have been the source of many of the old colony's problems. The penal colony was originally on Viper Island. The convicts, mostly political prisoners, suffered life imprisonment at hard labour under cruel and degrading conditions. Many were hanged, while others died of disease and starvation. Between 1864 and 1867 a penal establishment was also built with convict labour on the northern side of Ross Island. These structures now lie in ruins.

As the Indian freedom movement continued to grow in the late 19th century, the enormous Cellular Jail was constructed between 1896 and 1906 to house Indian convicts, mostly political prisoners, in solitary confinement. The Cellular Jail is also known as Kala Pani (translated as "Black Waters"), a name given to it due to the torture and general ill-treatment towards its Indian convicts.  You can book Cheap Andaman Tour Package.

In World War II the islands were occupied by the Japanese on 23 March 1942 without opposition from the garrison. British forces returned to the islands in October 1945.

From 1943–44 during World War II, Port Blair served as the headquarters of the Azad Hind government under Subhas Chandra Bose.

Although affected by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, Port Blair survived sufficiently to act as a base for relief efforts in the islands. Travel Agency in Delhi

Kashmir The Haven of India

Kashmir is the northernmost geographical region of the India. Until the mid-19th century, the term "Kashmir" denoted only the Kashmir Valley between the Great Himalayas and the Pir Panjal Range. Today, the term encompasses a larger area that includes the Indian-territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, the Pakistani-occupide territories of Pakistan-Occupide-Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, and the Chinese-Occupide-territories (During India-China war 1962) of Aksai Chin and the Trans-Karakoram Tract.

In the first half of the first millennium, the Kashmir region became an important centre of Hinduism and later of Buddhism; later still, in the ninth century, Kashmir Shaivism arose. In 1339, Shah Mir became the first Muslim ruler of Kashmir, inaugurating the Salatin-i-Kashmir or Shah Mir dynasty. The region was part of the Mughal Empire from 1586 to 1751, and thereafter, until 1820, of the Afghan Durrani Empire. That year, the Sikh Empire, under Ranjit Singh, annexed Kashmir. In 1846, after the Sikh defeat in the First Anglo-Sikh War, and upon the purchase of the region from the British under the Treaty of Amritsar, the Raja of Jammu, Gulab Singh, became the new ruler of Kashmir. The rule of his descendants, under the paramountcy (or tutelage) of the British Crown, lasted until the Partition of India in 1947, when the former princely state of the British Indian Empire became a disputed territory, now administered by three countries: India, Pakistan, and China.
majority population of kashmir is mushlim but fact of the matter is there no one any kashmiri mushlim became the ruler of Kashmir from the begning. yes Shah Mir became the first Muslim ruler of Kashmir but He was not Kashmiri.

Hinduism and Buddhism in Kashmir.

During the ancient and medieval periods, Kashmir was an important centre for the development of a Hindu-Buddhist syncretism, in which Madhyamaka and Yogachara were blended with Shaivism and Advaita Vedanta. The Buddhist Mauryan emperor Ashoka is often credited with having founded the old capital of Kashmir, Shrinagari, now ruins on the outskirts of modern Srinagar. Kashmir was long a stronghold of Buddhism. As a Buddhist seat of learning, the Sarvastivada school strongly influenced Kashmir. East and Central Asian Buddhist monks are recorded as having visited the kingdom. In the late 4th century CE, the famous Kuchanese monk Kumārajīva, born to an Indian noble family, studied Dīrghāgama and Madhyāgama in Kashmir under Bandhudatta. He later became a prolific translator who helped take Buddhism to China. His mother Jīva is thought to have retired to Kashmir. Vimalākṣa, a Sarvāstivādan Buddhist monk, travelled from Kashmir to Kucha and there instructed Kumārajīva in the Vinayapiṭaka.
Karkoṭa Empire (625–885 CE) was a powerful Hindu empire, which originated in the region of Kashmir. It was founded by Durlabhvardhana during the lifetime of Harsha. The dynasty marked the rise of Kashmir as a power in South Asia. Avanti Varman ascended the throne of Kashmir on 855 CE, establishing the Utpala dynasty and ending the rule of Karkoṭa dynasty.

According to tradition, Adi Shankara visited the pre-existing Sarvajñapīṭha (Sharada Peeth) in Kashmir in the late 8th century or early 9th century CE. The Madhaviya Shankaravijayam states this temple had four doors for scholars from the four cardinal directions. The southern door of Sarvajna Pitha was opened by Adi Shankara. According to tradition, Adi Shankara opened the southern door by defeating in debate all the scholars there in all the various scholastic disciplines such as Mīmāṃsā, Vedanta and other branches of Hindu philosophy; he ascended the throne of Transcendent wisdom of that temple.

Abhinavagupta (c. 950–1020 CE was one of India's greatest philosophers, mystics and aestheticians. He was also considered an important musician, poet, dramatist, exegete, theologian, and logician– a polymathic personality who exercised strong influences on Indian culture. He was born in the Kashmir Valley in a family of scholars and mystics and studied all the schools of philosophy and art of his time under the guidance of as many as fifteen (or more) teachers and gurus. In his long life he completed over 35 works, the largest and most famous of which is Tantrāloka, an encyclopaedic treatise on all the philosophical and practical aspects of Trika and Kaula (known today as Kashmir Shaivism). Another one of his very important contributions was in the field of philosophy of aesthetics with his famous Abhinavabhāratī commentary of Nāṭyaśāstra of Bharata Muni.

In the 10th century Mokshopaya or Moksopaya Shastra, a philosophical text on salvation for non-ascetics , was written on the Pradyumna hill in Srinagar. It has the form of a public sermon and claims human authorship and contains about 30,000 shloka's (making it longer than the Ramayana). The main part of the text forms a dialogue between Vashistha and Rama, interchanged with numerous short stories and anecdotes to illustrate the content. This text was later (11th to the 14th century CE) expanded and vedanticised, which resulted in the Yoga Vasistha.

Queen Kota Rani was medieval Hindu ruler of Kashmir, ruling until 1339. She was a notable ruler who is often credited for saving Srinagar city from frequent floods by getting a canal constructed, named after her "Kutte Kol". This canal receives water from Jhelum River at the entry point of city and again merges with Jhelum river beyond the city limits.

Sikh rule

In 1819, the Kashmir Valley passed from the control of the Durrani Empire of Afghanistan to the conquering armies of the Sikhs under Ranjit Singh of the Punjab, thus ending four centuries of Muslim rule under the Mughals and the Afghan regime. As the Kashmiris had suffered under the Afghans, they initially welcomed the new Sikh rulers. However, the Sikh governors turned out to be hard taskmasters, and Sikh rule was generally considered oppressive, protected perhaps by the remoteness of Kashmir from the capital of the Sikh Empire in Lahore. The Sikhs enacted a number of anti-Muslim laws, which included handing out death sentences for cow slaughter, closing down the Jamia Masjid in Srinagar, and banning the adhan, the public Muslim call to prayer. Kashmir had also now begun to attract European visitors, several of whom wrote of the abject poverty of the vast Muslim peasantry and of the exorbitant taxes under the Sikhs. High taxes, according to some contemporary accounts, had depopulated large tracts of the countryside, allowing only one-sixteenth of the cultivable land to be cultivated. Many Kashmiri peasants migrated to the plains of the Punjab. However, after a famine in 1832, the Sikhs reduced the land tax to half the produce of the land and also began to offer interest-free loans to farmers; Kashmir became the second highest revenue earner for the Sikh Empire. During this time Kashmir shawls became known worldwide, attracting many buyers, especially in the West.

The state of Jammu, which had been on the ascendant after the decline of the Mughal Empire, came under the sway of the Sikhs in 1770. Further in 1808, it was fully conquered by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Gulab Singh, then a youngster in the House of Jammu, enrolled in the Sikh troops and, by distinguishing himself in campaigns, gradually rose in power and influence. In 1822, he was anointed as the Raja of Jammu. Along with his able general Zorawar Singh Kahluria, he conquered and subdued Rajouri (1821), Kishtwar (1821), Suru valley and Kargil (1835), Ladakh (1834–1840), and Baltistan (1840), thereby surrounding the Kashmir Valley. He became a wealthy and influential noble in the Sikh court.

1947 and 1948

Ranbir Singh's grandson Hari Singh, who had ascended the throne of Kashmir in 1925, was the reigning monarch in 1947 at the conclusion of British rule of the subcontinent and the subsequent partition of the British Indian Empire into the newly independent Dominion of India and the Dominion of Pakistan. According to Burton Stein's History of India,

"Kashmir was neither as large nor as old an independent state as Hyderabad; it had been created rather off-handedly by the British after the first defeat of the Sikhs in 1846, as a reward to a former official who had sided with the British. The Himalayan kingdom was connected to India through a district of the Punjab, but its population was 77 per cent Muslim and it shared a boundary with Pakistan. Hence, it was anticipated that the maharaja would accede to Pakistan when the British paramountcy ended on 14–15 August. When he hesitated to do this, Pakistan launched a guerrilla onslaught meant to frighten its ruler into submission. Instead the Maharaja appealed to Mountbatten for assistance, and the governor-general agreed on the condition that the ruler accede to India. Indian soldiers entered Kashmir and drove the Pakistani-sponsored irregulars from all but a small section of the state. The United Nations was then invited to mediate the quarrel. The UN mission insisted that the opinion of Kashmiris must be ascertained, while India insisted that no referendum could occur until all of the state had been cleared of irregulars."

In the last days of 1948, a ceasefire was agreed under UN auspices. However, since the plebiscite demanded by the UN was never conducted, relations between India and Pakistan soured, and eventually led to two more wars over Kashmir in 1965 and 1999.

History Of Port Blair

The airport at Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar's capital, has been named Veer Savarkar International Airport. The commemorative blue plaque on India House fixed by the Historic Building and Monuments Commission for England reads "Vinayak Damodar Savarkar 1883–1966 Indian patriot and philosopher lived here."

Pre-history

The indigenous inhabitants are the Andamenese. Radiocarbon dating studies of the kitchen refuse dumps from the mounds excavated by the Anthropological Survey of India at Choladari near Port Blair indicate human occupation for at least 2,000 years, [better source needed] although they are likely to have diverged from the inhabitants of the mainland significantly earlier.

It is home to several museums and a major naval base INS Jarawa of the Indian Navy, along with sea and air bases of the Indian Coast Guard, Andaman and Nicobar Police, Andaman and Nicobar Command, the first integrated tri-command of the Indian Armed Forces and the Indian Air Force.[4]

Port Blair is also famous for the historic Cellular Jail and other small islands like Corbyn's Cove, Wandoor, Ross Island, Viper Island etc. which were once home to British colonists. Port Blair has been selected as one of the cities to be developed as a smart city under the Smart Cities Mission.
Port Blair has a tropical monsoon climate (Köppen climate classification Am), with little variation in average temperature and large amounts of precipitation throughout the year. All months except January, February and March receive substantial rainfall.
