Did you all catch yesterday's article in the NY Observer about plagiarism at the NY Times? Seems cut-and-paste has become the disease du jour among certain writers. You've never done it, of course, but have you, in your capacities as writers, ever had your work plagiarized online or elsewhere? And as editors, have you had writers submit articles that you subsequently discovered had been lifted from other sources? How did you deal with it? And what can we as a profession do to help stem the tide of irresponsible journalism?

Thanks, Kristi; quite right. Just to clarify, it's not ideas for destinations I'm seeking (I've been visiting Europe even longer than I've been a travel writer), but agencies or companies that arrange home stays unrelated to language classes or such.

As one who was once in a similar position, I'd like to suggest Istanbul. It's Western enough for her to cope with yet Eastern enough for her to feel she is in a whole new world - which she is wherever she chooses to go. And Turkish men are charming and adore American women. She can be the belle of the ball if she wants to.

That's right, Allan: Madrid would be the ticket. She's been alone for a while (being in a bad marriage is like being alone, times ten), so she's ready for go-go Madrid by night. Don't know why I didn't think of Craigslist, Buzzy; my wife and I use that site so much we oughta have a shrine to it. Thanks.

If she wants to rock and roll on a budget, look at Madrid (the coffee shops and Metro are full at 6 am with people left over from the night before), or Paris. I got some friends an apartment in Paris for less than a grand a week. Of course, there's always London. The pound is weak. It isn't as late night-ish as other cities, unless she doesn't mind hanging out with uni students or gay guys.
