"Is there water in the canal?" ... "I thought that closed?" -- If this is your perception of NYS's contemporary Erie Canal, then you're in for a big surprise! You're missing out on one of the nation's greatest treasures and NYS' under-appreciated gem of a waterway -- and all the attractions, great cities and irresistible villages along its 525mi. length.

The Canal New York Marketing & Business Alliance, The NYS Canal Corporation, and The Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor will once again host a private, invitation-only event in NYC on June 23, 2011 at O'Casey's Irish Pub in midtown Manhattan. Last year's inaugural event was a fun time -- excellent food, surprising information and entertainment.

This year, we're looking for travel media interested in our two (2) new Fam tours -- one this summer along the western Erie Canal portion, and one in September along the Champlain region.

Here are just some of the niches you'll find: family travel, solo travel, Boomers, architecture, birding, environment, arts & culture, cultural heritage, boating, hiking, kayaking, biking, agritourism, food & wine, and of course -- history.

If you are in the NYC, NJ, CT area or a train ride out of Manhattan in PA -- please let me know if you'd be interested in receiving an invitation.

  • I'm interested if this event is June 23, thanks! I have a kayaking angle that I'd love to explore for this region.
  • There are several small ships that cruise along the canals, some of them then coming down the Hudson River. These are great fall foliage cruises. For descriptions see www.smallshipcruises.com

    • I agree, Shirley. I spent 3 days aboard MidLakes Navigation's canal hire boat and it was heaven. I was with fellow member Andy Hayes -- there are great cruises and self-piloted boating opportunities. But you can also hike, bike, kayak, camp, drive along the canal corridor.
