Though relatively modest as important temples go, this one is especially revered in Sri Lanka for its links to the country´s history, dating back to its founding, it´s said around 500 BCE, during the third visit to the island of the Buddha himself (if it doesn´t look nearly that old, it´s because it was rebuilt in the 18th century). About seven miles away from the capital city, Kelaniya is also famous for a gem-studded throne from which the Buddha supposedly preached (frankly, knowing a bit about the Buddha´s teachings, I´m doubtful he would´ve condoned something so flashy); a reclining Buddha image; and paintings celebrating important events in his life.
