Located in the Tigray region in the far north, near the border with Eritrea near the towns of Azigrat and Bizet, Debre Damo is an amba (flat topped mountain) at an elevation of 2,216m (7,270 feet), and its monastery was founded in the 6th century, known for its collection of manuscripts and for having the earliest existing church building still in its original style.The recent cessation of civil war between the central government and the Tigray People's Liberation Front has once again made the region more accessible.
