Down near the waterfront on Plaza de la Constitución we checked out one of the iconic, 23-foot-tall Pillars of Hercules statues (above the other one is in front of the ferry terminal), designed by local artist Ginés Serrán-Pagán and installed in the early 2006. It alludes to the myth of the eponymous Greek demigod who as part of his Twelve Labors supposedly created the Strait of Gibraltar, flanked by the Rock of Gibraltar at a southern mountain in North Africa, said to be Ceuta´s Mount Hacho (although another candidate is Morocco´s Jebel Musa,14 miles west of Ceuta)..
